MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

The main function of the universities, historically one of the most important institutions in which the knowledge is produced, is to teach and spread the knowledge that is produced. Scientific research, career training and culture transfer are the three functions of deserving the attribution of being a university and these three functions should be fulfilled simultaneously.

Any physician who is a graduate of a medical faculty is expected to be an intellectual who can offer new and alternative approaches to the knowledge that exists, and be able to make in-depth conversations about history and philosophy. An intellectual physician educated in this sense should be able to observe and analyze the problems of the society in which he belongs to and build their own opinions with a scientific look and a sense of responsibility.

Today, the science of medicine is being criticized more than before and negative emotions towards all the healthcare professionals, particularly towards the physicians, became rapidly prevalent. But, what can be done about this? To begin with a student of medicine can be a good start, because the beginning determines everything. Our before and after graduation training programs aim to obtain the person “the professional and ethical values of medicine” which is a must for a good medical science. The primary objective of the medical faculties should be to educate physicians who have professional identity consciousness, successful in communication and human relations, equipped with business ethics along with scientific and technical equipment, and sensitive to the society’s health issues. When introducing a physician candidate with medicine, “sense of identity”, “sense of responsibility” and “sense of profession” should be created. The physician candidates should be able to evaluate medicine, realizing how their occupational identity is shaped, perceiving their own role from a wider and more realistic perspective.

Sickness is a phase and during this phase the way the “problem solving” methods are used and the existence of the ability to think methodologically is important. The society does not only expect a certain amount of medical knowledge and skill from the physician but also expects the physician to perform certain moral values that are accepted as appropriate to physician identity. The medical faculties that teach the art of medicine are extremely effective intuitions to obtain a physician identity.

Modern healthcare services caused complicated and multidimensional ethical dilemmas. Usually, physicians are not prepared to solve these dilemmas. Our faculty’s medical ethics education is structured to strengthen the ethical understanding and applications of the physician candidates and physicians, and to provide them with moral solutions for these dilemmas. The main objective of medical ethics education is to provide individual ethical thinking and to obtain the students with the success of solving many cases that improve discussion in the team environment effectively and in accordance with the medical ethics methodology; to enhance the ability to find solutions for ethical issues before they violate the legal and moral principles; to shape the moral awareness that is attained during a natural process into a moral consciousness and to act according to this moral consciousness; to ensure that the ethical principles and values are used effectively in the clinical applications. With this understanding, our department, along with the basic medical ethics and clinical ethics, also carries on the education for Continuing Medical Education with compulsory and voluntary training, seminars and conferences.

Besides our education, our contribution and counseling to our University’s Ethical Committees (Hacettepe University Ethics Commission, Academic Ethics Board, Clinical Research Ethics Board, Non-interventional Clinical Research Ethics Board, Animal Experiments Local Ethics Committee) continues.

Our University is still contributing to bioethics both nationally and internationally via the “Bioethics Education, Research and Application Center”
